What is BMI and Why is it Important?
The Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple and quick way to assess whether your weight is within a healthy range for your height. It is a widely used tool by health professionals to identify potential weight-related health risks.
Although it doesn't differentiate between fat and muscle, BMI is an excellent starting point for understanding your current condition.
To find out yours, use our BMI Calculator and see where you fit.
How is BMI Calculated?
The Formula:
BMI = Weight (kg) ÷ [Height (m) × Height (m)]
Practical Example:
For a person weighing 70kg and 1.75m tall:
BMI = 70 ÷ (1.75 × 1.75) = 70 ÷ 3.0625 = 22.86 kg/m²

Limitations of BMI
Attention: BMI does not differentiate between fat and muscle!
- • It may misclassify athletes (more muscle) as overweight.
- • It doesn't consider fat distribution (abdominal fat is more dangerous).
- • It is not suitable for pregnant women, children, and the elderly without specific tables.
